Carry Me Home Tonight (my wonderful bride)
by E. Hyland Maze
On the eve of the end of sadder days
On this night when I have walked finally to the edge
I am glad that you are with me
That this challenge has found me with you by my side
Thankfulness swallows my pride
And I am overcome with gratitude
That loneliness will not be my adversary tonight
Knowing that your love holds me safely
I should have never come here
To this place where time does not heal its wounds
To this hell whose doors wait for me to jump
But I am glad my friend has walked here with me
Let’s not walk in, but let’s fly away
Give me lift by the wings of fondness and grace
And let forgetfulness rule our hearts as we soar
Past this black night that holds no promise of tomorrow
But, there is always tomorrow with you
You are the only tomorrow that has ever come
From any cloudy or rainy or dreary day
The only sunshine I have ever known is you
When my path wrapped around wandering
And my eyes settled on glistening phantoms of love
When my heart split and thought itself wise
Like rain I fell into fields of desperate flowers
No crown of thorns, now, is good enough for this shame
Take away any thought of piercing these hands
Let my feet be unworthy of the cold, hard spikes
Bury me not at the end of this road
There is no martyr here
All that is left is this broken hope
And this broken man who has only lived for love
And these shattered pieces of misguided bliss
Yet, I dare ask of you to still be here
Be my lover and friend and gather me in
With the arms that have known how to carry me
How to carry me, how to carry me, how to carry me home
